How to Learn AI for Free: A Simple Student Roadmap
You do not need a paid course, a computer, or maths at university level to start learning AI. You need a phone, free resources, and a simple plan you actually follow.
Week 1: Understand the idea
Read simple explanations of AI, machine learning, and chatbots. Watch 2-3 free beginner videos. Your goal is not to memorise, it is to be able to explain AI to a friend in 2 minutes.
Week 2: Try tools, safely
Use a free chatbot to explain topics, make practice questions, and check your work. Never copy answers blindly, and never type private information into a public tool.
Week 3: Learn the basics of data
AI runs on data. Learn what data is, why clean data matters, and why biased data makes biased AI. Free courses from big tech companies and universities cover this in simple language.
Week 4: Make a small project
Pick one tiny project: a chatbot that answers questions about your school subject, a simple image classifier using a free no-code tool, or a blog post explaining an AI tool you tested. A finished small project teaches more than 10 unfinished courses.
What to skip at the start
- Heavy maths and coding theory — come back to it later, if you need it.
- Paid courses that promise a job in 30 days.
- Learning 5 tools at once — learn one tool well, then move on.
Your test: at the end of a month, can you explain AI, show one project, and name one limit of AI? If yes, you have really started. If not, restart with a smaller project, not a bigger course.
